Wood Stove

Operating Instructions

There's nothing quite like a warm fire after a day exploring Vermont! Hytta features a Hearthstone Bari wood-burning stove for cozy evenings at home.

Please review the following instructions before lighting a fire.

Before You Begin

  • Crack open a nearby window while operating the stove to provide combustion air.

  • Use only dry firewood, newspaper, and kindling. Firewood is provided in the outdoor storage area.

  • Keep furniture, blankets, and other flammable materials a safe distance from the stove.

  • Never leave a burning fire unattended.

  • Keep children away from the stove and hot glass.

Lighting a Fire

1. Prepare the firebox

Place five or six tightly twisted double sheets of newspaper in the center of the firebox. Arrange approximately ten small pieces of kindling in a teepee shape over the newspaper.

2. Open the air control

Fully open the primary air control by pulling the handle outward, away from the stove.

3. Light the newspaper

Light the newspaper beneath the kindling. Leave the stove door slightly ajar momentarily until the kindling catches and the chimney draft is established.

4. Close the door

Close the stove door and allow the kindling to burn.

5. Add firewood

Once the kindling is burning well, carefully open the door and add a few small logs. Keep logs away from the front glass.

6. Adjust the heat

Once the fire is established, use the primary air control to regulate the burn rate:

  • Pull the handle outward for a higher burn rate.

  • Push the handle inward for a lower burn rate.

Keep the stove door and ash pan closed during normal operation.

Adding More Firewood

When adding logs, open the stove door slightly and pause before opening it fully. This allows smoke to clear from the firebox.

For best results, add new logs while a bed of hot coals remains.

Important Safety Reminders

  • Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, kerosene, liquid fire starters, or other chemicals to start a fire.

  • Do not burn artificial logs, charcoal, pellets, coal, garbage, or treated materials.

  • Never leave an active fire unattended or operate the stove with the door open.

  • The stove and glass become extremely hot during use.

  • Do not remove ashes or attempt to clean the stove during your stay.

Before leaving the home or going to bed, allow the fire to burn down safely.
