what are you really buying when you buy a wellness home?

People often ask if buyers get to choose every finish in one of our homes.

maybe its the tile. the countertops. the hardware or the cabinets.

We always smile because we understand the question. It’s the way most of us have been taught to think about homes. We compare kitchens. We compare finishes. We compare square footages.

But those aren’t the first things Scott and I think about when we’re designing a home. In fact, by the time we’re choosing cabinet hardware, we’ve already made hundreds of decisions that will have a much greater impact on how someone lives in that home. Those decisions just happen to be hidden behind the drywall.

When Scott and I started Velvaere, we weren’t trying to become another architecture firm or another builder. We wanted to create something that reflected the way we believe people should experience home.

a home shouldn’t simply look beautiful. it should help you feel better.

That sounds simple, but it changes almost every decision we make. Instead of asking, What countertops should we use?” we ask, “How will this home feel on a January morning?”

Will there be cold drafts by the windows?

Will the temperature stay comfortable from room to room?

Will the air feel fresh without opening a window?

Will the kitchen be bright enough that someone naturally wants to gather there over coffee?

Will the utility bills create stress every month, or will the home quietly take care of itself?

Those are the questions that matter to us. They’re also the questions you can’t answer by walking through a beautifully staged home for fifteen minutes.

“if we have to choose between custom cabinetry and better windows, we’ll choose the windows everytime.”

One of the biggest misconceptions about building a home is that spending more automatically creates a better house. We’ve never believed that. Every home has a budget. The questions isn’t whether to spend money, its where to spend it.

If we have to choose between an elaborate roofline and a tighter thermal envelope, we’ll choose the envelope.

If we have to choose between luxury finishes and healthier indoor air, we’ll choose healthier indoor air.

Not because those things photograph well. Because you’ll experience them every single day.

When we present a velvaere home, we’re presenting something we’ve thought deeply about.

We’ve tested these ideas in our own lives. We’ve lived with them. Raised our children in them. Experienced Vermont winters in them. Adjusted them. Refined them. Every home we build teaches us something, and the next one becomes even better.

That’s the product. Not a cabinet color. Not a faucet.

A carefully considered home built around health, comfort, efficiency, and connection to nature.

Of course, once someone buys one of our homes, it’s theirs. Paint the walls. Replace a light fixture. Add your own story. Homes should evolve with the people who live in them.

But the foundation—the invisible decisions that shape everyday life—is already there.

The Takeaway:

when people buy one of our homes, they’re buying something that is completely unique.

Every Velvaere home is one-of-one. Designed together. Built together. Refined through our own experience as a family.

That doesn’t mean our homes are for everyone. And that’s okay.

We’re not trying to build the biggest homes or the flashiest homes. We’re trying to build homes that quietly make life better. Homes where the light feels right. The air feels clean. The temperature stays comfortable. The energy bills don’t create stress. The garden becomes part of dinner. The landscape becomes part of everyday life.

To us, that’s wellness architecture.

And if you ask me…

That’s the real product.
